The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has officially opened applications for its 2026 Internship Program, offering hundreds of young Ugandans an opportunity to gain practical workplace experience and professional exposure in one of the country’s leading government institutions.

According to the announcement released in May 2026, the internship program is designed to help university students and young professionals develop practical skills, build professional networks and gain firsthand experience in Uganda’s tax administration and public service environment.

The internship program will run during the July–August 2026 cycle and is expected to attract applications from students across different universities and academic disciplines in Uganda. URA announced that a total of 286 internship positions are available, including 84 placements located in upcountry stations.

According to the Authority, eligible applicants must be pursuing academic disciplines relevant to URA’s operational areas. These include Accounting and Finance, Economics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Taxation, Law, Information Technology, Human Resource Management, Communications and Public Relations, Project Planning and Management, Records and Archives Management, Logistics and Fleet Management, and Library and Information Science.

The Uganda Revenue Authority stated that the program aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world work experience by exposing students to practical assignments, mentorship and professional guidance within the institution.

In its official announcement, URA said:

"Every year, URA provides students with the chance to gain practical experience and exposure in their respective fields of study through temporary work opportunities.”

The statement was included in the 2026 Internship Program notice released by the Authority.

The Authority further explained that the program allows students to “build connections with professionals, explore career growth in Tax Administration, and prepare for the competitive job market in Uganda.”

Officials noted that applicants interested in placements outside Kampala are encouraged to indicate their preferred district during the application process. URA also emphasized that all applications must be submitted online, as physical applications will not be accepted.

The application deadline for the internship program has been set for May 17, 2026, at 11:59 PM.

Education experts and career development analysts have welcomed the program, describing it as an important opportunity for Ugandan youth seeking professional exposure and practical work experience in government institutions. Analysts say internship opportunities continue to play a critical role in improving employability among graduates and university students in Uganda.

Many young Ugandans have increasingly expressed concerns about the challenges of securing internship placements due to high competition and limited opportunities. Discussions on online youth forums and social media platforms show that many students view internships as essential for building work experience and increasing future employment prospects.

One Ugandan student seeking internship opportunities wrote on an online discussion platform:

“I sent applications but no reply from most organizations.”

Another student noted:

“It feels like a connection thing to get an internship.”

The comments reflect growing competition for internship opportunities among university students and fresh graduates in Uganda.

Analysts believe programs such as the URA Internship Program help address this challenge by providing structured workplace learning opportunities and exposure to professional environments. The initiative is also expected to support government efforts aimed at youth empowerment, skills development and workforce readiness.

The Uganda Revenue Authority remains one of Uganda’s key public institutions responsible for assessing, collecting and accounting for government tax and non-tax revenue under the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. Through initiatives such as the internship program, the Authority continues to invest in developing future professionals and strengthening institutional capacity.

Career experts have encouraged eligible students across Uganda to take advantage of the opportunity, describing the program as an important stepping stone for young people interested in careers in finance, taxation, public administration, technology, law and communications.

The 2026 internship program is expected to provide selected participants with valuable professional experience, mentorship and exposure that could significantly improve their career prospects in Uganda’s increasingly competitive job market.
