Applications are currently open for the Presidential African Youth in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Competition 2026 (AYAIR 2026), a continental initiative designed to empower young innovators developing solutions in artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and emerging technologies. The competition is widely regarded as one of Africa’s largest youth-focused technology innovation platforms and aims to position the continent as a global leader in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The third edition of the competition is being hosted by the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt through its Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), in partnership with Ele-vate AI Africa and the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD). The initiative is aligned with the African Union’s Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2034) and broader continental development frameworks, including Agenda 2063.

Organizers describe the competition as more than a traditional innovation challenge. Rather than focusing solely on awards, the program seeks to create pathways that connect young innovators with policymakers, investors, researchers, industry leaders, and technology institutions capable of helping transform ideas into scalable solutions.

According to the official program announcement, the competition aims to strengthen Africa’s innovation ecosystem while promoting technology-driven economic development.

“The program connects youth innovators with investors, policymakers, and industry leaders,” organizers stated, highlighting the initiative’s commitment to supporting practical and scalable technology solutions.

The competition is open to African youth aged 15 to 35 years, either as individuals or as members of multidisciplinary teams. Organizers encourage participation from students, researchers, entrepreneurs, developers, engineers, and innovators working on technologies that address real-world challenges facing African communities and economies. Applications are scheduled to close on 30 June 2026.

This year’s edition features 12 thematic categories covering critical sectors of economic and social development. These include AI and robotics healthcare solutions, agricultural innovation, climate action technology, fintech, education technologies, ethical AI systems, construction innovation, smart manufacturing, community governance solutions, quantum computing, and advanced robotics design. A special Presidential Award category will recognize the competition’s overall top innovation.

The competition arrives at a time when African governments are increasingly prioritizing digital transformation and technological sovereignty. Organizers believe that empowering young innovators to create locally relevant solutions can help address challenges in healthcare, agriculture, education, climate resilience, and industrial productivity while simultaneously creating employment opportunities for the continent’s rapidly growing youth population.

In announcing the competition, partners emphasized the importance of ensuring that Africa is not merely consuming new technologies but actively shaping them.

“Africa is entering a defining moment in AI; not as a passive consumer of technology, but as a creator of solutions,” organizers noted during an AI-focused event associated with the competition.

The scale of participation in previous editions demonstrates the growing interest in emerging technologies among African youth. Organizers report that the inaugural edition in 2024 attracted more than 1,000 submissions, while the 2025 edition received over 3,200 entries from innovators representing all 55 African Union member states. The 2026 edition is expected to surpass those figures as awareness of the platform continues to grow.

Past editions have produced a range of innovative projects addressing challenges in healthcare, agriculture, disability inclusion, and smart technologies. Winners of previous competitions developed AI-powered brain-computer interface technologies for mobility assistance, agricultural disease detection systems, sign-language translation tools, and advanced prosthetic devices powered by artificial intelligence.

Mfon Udechukwu, who previously served as a judge in the competition, praised the quality of innovations emerging from young African inventors.

“It’s incredible to see the bright minds shaping Africa’s innovation," Udechukwu said while congratulating winners of an earlier edition of the competition.

Successful participants in the 2026 edition will gain access to networking opportunities, exposure to investors and development partners, commercialization support, and continental recognition. Select winners may also be showcased at international events, including the International Telecommunication Union’s AI for Good Global Summit, providing an opportunity for African innovators to present their work on a global stage.

Beyond the awards themselves, organizers view the competition as a strategic investment in Africa’s digital future. By encouraging youth-led innovation and supporting the commercialization of emerging technologies, the initiative aims to strengthen industrialization, create jobs, enhance intra-African trade, and build a more competitive digital economy.

As Africa continues to position itself within the global technology landscape, the Presidential African Youth in AI and Robotics Competition 2026 offers young innovators a platform to transform ideas into impactful solutions while contributing to the continent’s long-term economic and technological development. Through innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship, participants will play a role in shaping Africa’s future in artificial intelligence and robotics.
