Applications are currently open for the ICMM Young Leaders Scholarship 2026, a fully funded global leadership opportunity that will support outstanding young changemakers working in sustainability, biodiversity conservation, climate action, and responsible resource management. The scholarship is being offered through a partnership between the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and One Young World, with successful applicants receiving sponsorship to attend the prestigious One Young World Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, from 3–6 November 2026.

The scholarship officially opened on 29 April 2026, with applications set to close on 7 June 2026. Young leaders aged between 18 and 35 are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate measurable impact in areas such as decarbonization, biodiversity protection, social performance, sustainable mining practices, and environmental governance.

According to ICMM, the program seeks to recognize and support individuals who are already driving meaningful change within their communities, organizations, and industries. The initiative comes at a time when global demand for critical minerals is increasing as countries accelerate efforts to achieve net-zero emissions and transition toward greener economies.

In announcing the scholarship, ICMM emphasized the importance of responsible resource production and sustainable development. The organization noted that while mining plays a crucial role in supplying materials required for renewable energy technologies, it must also ensure environmental protection, respect for human rights, and community well-being. ICMM stated that if managed responsibly, mining can be "transformational," creating jobs, infrastructure, skills development, and economic growth while minimizing harm to people and the environment.

Successful candidates will receive full funding to participate in the summit, including travel, accommodation, meals, and access to all official activities. Scholars will also gain lifelong membership in the One Young World Ambassador Community, a global network of more than 20,000 young leaders from over 190 countries. Additional benefits include participation in leadership development programs, mentorship opportunities, and an exclusive dialogue session with the ICMM Chief Executive Officer.

One Young World described its mission as identifying, connecting, and elevating the next generation of global leaders. Through partnerships with organizations such as ICMM, the platform continues to provide opportunities for young people to expand their impact and collaborate on solutions to pressing global challenges. The organization reports that it has invested millions of dollars in scholarships and grants aimed at supporting youth-led initiatives worldwide.

Past scholarship recipients have highlighted the long-term value of participating in One Young World programs. Ronald Mugaiga, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Ecomak Recyclers and a previous One Young World scholar, said the experience provided lasting professional connections and opportunities for growth.

"I'm still in touch with so many other people that I met at the Summit," Mugaiga said. "After the Summit, we got the funding from my sponsor, the Z Zurich Foundation, which was really important for us to see the business grow as well."

Similarly, Yi Jun Mock, Co-Founder and President of Advisory Singapore, emphasized the value of partnerships developed through the One Young World network.

"The industry perspectives they've brought to educators on topics like the green and digital economies has been invaluable,"

Mock noted.

The ICMM Young Leaders Scholarship is particularly significant as sustainability and climate-related issues increasingly dominate global policy discussions. The program aims to equip emerging leaders with the skills, networks, and resources necessary to address environmental challenges while promoting responsible economic development. By bringing together young innovators, activists, researchers, and professionals from around the world, the initiative seeks to encourage collaboration and accelerate solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future.

As the application deadline approaches, interested candidates are encouraged to prepare evidence of their leadership achievements and community impact. Selected scholars will have the opportunity to represent their countries on an international stage while engaging with policymakers, business leaders, and fellow changemakers committed to advancing sustainable development worldwide.

With full financial support, global networking opportunities, and access to influential leaders, the ICMM Young Leaders Scholarship 2026 offers a unique platform for young people working to shape a more sustainable and equitable future.
