Young photographers from across the Commonwealth have been invited to apply for the Commonwealth Youth Photography Competition 2026, an international contest designed to celebrate creativity, environmental awareness and youth storytelling through photography. The competition is organized by the Royal Commonwealth Society in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat and the City of London Youth Natural Environment Board.
According to the official announcement released in May 2026, the competition is open to young people aged between 18 and 30 from all 56 Commonwealth member nations. Organizers said the initiative aims to provide young creatives with a global platform to share visual stories focused on oceans, waterways, climate change and environmental sustainability.
This year’s theme is titled “Waves of Change,” encouraging participants to explore the beauty, vulnerability and transformation of oceans and aquatic ecosystems through photography. Organizers noted that the competition seeks images capable of inspiring conversations about environmental protection and community resilience.
In the official competition description, the organizers stated:
“We’re looking for images that move people.”
The statement was released by the Royal Commonwealth Society during the launch of the 2026 competition.
The organizers further explained that the competition is intended to celebrate “young talent, global connection, and the natural world that binds us all.”
Participants are required to submit one original photograph responding to one of four competition categories. These include Human Ocean Connection, Hope & Resilience, Threats & Challenges, and Innovative Solutions. The categories focus on issues such as marine pollution, rising sea levels, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and community-led environmental protection efforts.
According to the competition guidelines, entrants must also submit a written explanation of no more than 300 words describing the meaning behind their photograph and its connection to the selected category. Organizers emphasized that no professional photography experience is required and that smartphone photography submissions are welcomed.
The competition offers significant recognition and cash prizes for winners. Four category winners will be selected, with one overall winner receiving a grand prize of £1,000, while the remaining category winners will each receive £250. Entry into the competition is completely free.
Applications for the competition are scheduled to close on June 8, 2026, which coincides with World Oceans Day. Organizers stated that late submissions would not be accepted after the official deadline.
