African researchers and scholars have been encouraged to apply for the 2027–2028 French Institutes for Advanced Study (FIAS) Fellowship Program at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study (Paris IAS), a fully funded academic opportunity designed to support high-level international research collaboration in France.

The fellowship program, which is open to researchers from around the world, offers selected fellows the opportunity to conduct independent research in Paris while benefiting from a monthly living allowance of €2,700, accommodation support, social security coverage and research resources during the fellowship period.

According to information released by the French Institutes for Advanced Study Network in May 2026, applications for the 2027–2028 academic cycle are currently open and are expected to attract scholars from various disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary research fields.

The Paris Institute for Advanced Study is one of France’s leading research institutions, bringing together academics, scientists and intellectuals from different parts of the world to work on innovative projects and exchange ideas in an international academic environment.

The fellowship program aims to promote academic excellence and strengthen global scientific cooperation by providing researchers with time, funding and institutional support to advance their work free from regular teaching and administrative obligations.

The fellowship program aims to promote academic excellence and strengthen global scientific cooperation by providing researchers with time, funding and institutional support to advance their work free from regular teaching and administrative obligations.

According to the program announcement, successful candidates will receive:

  • A monthly stipend of approximately €2,700
  • Accommodation or housing assistance
  • Social security coverage
  • Research and networking opportunities
  • Access to academic resources and collaborative platforms in France

The fellowship duration ranges from five to ten months depending on the research project and host institution arrangements.

In an official statement announcing the call for applications, the French Institutes for Advanced Study Network said:

“The FIAS Fellowship Program offers high-level scientific residencies in a stimulating research environment at the heart of major French cities.

The organization added that the program seeks to encourage international mobility and interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers from across the globe.

According to the official guidelines, applicants must hold a doctoral degree and demonstrate strong academic achievements relevant to their proposed research projects. Researchers from African universities and research institutions are particularly encouraged to apply as part of efforts to strengthen academic partnerships between Africa and Europe.

Officials involved in the program said the fellowship provides scholars with a unique opportunity to focus entirely on their research while engaging with leading academics and intellectual communities in France.

A representative from the French Institutes for Advanced Study Network stated:

“The program is designed to give fellows the freedom, time and supportive environment needed to pursue ambitious and innovative research projects.”

The statement further emphasized the importance of international academic exchange in addressing global challenges through collaborative research and knowledge sharing.

Education experts have described the fellowship as a major opportunity for African scholars seeking international exposure, research funding and professional networking opportunities in Europe. They note that many African researchers often face financial and institutional limitations that affect their ability to carry out advanced independent research.

Analysts say initiatives such as the FIAS Fellowship Program help bridge this gap by providing financial support and access to world-class academic infrastructure. The monthly stipend of €2,700 is expected to help fellows comfortably cover living expenses while residing in France during the program period.

The fellowship also offers participants the opportunity to build long-term international partnerships that could support future collaborative projects, publications and academic exchanges between African and European institutions.

Paris, widely recognized as one of the world’s leading academic and cultural centers, provides fellows with access to major universities, libraries, research institutions and global intellectual networks. Scholars selected for the program are expected to participate actively in seminars, conferences and interdisciplinary discussions organized by the host institution.

The French Institutes for Advanced Study Network noted that selection for the program is highly competitive and based on academic excellence, originality of research proposals and the potential impact of the proposed work.

Applications for the 2027–2028 fellowship cycle are expected to close in mid-2026, with successful candidates to be notified after completion of the evaluation and selection process.

Experts have encouraged African researchers interested in global policy, governance, social transformation, science, culture and innovation to take advantage of the opportunity, describing it as an important platform for strengthening Africa’s contribution to international academic research and intellectual discourse.

The program continues to attract scholars from different regions of the world and remains one of Europe’s most respected international fellowship opportunities for advanced research and interdisciplinary collaboration.
