The African Union (AU) has officially opened applications for the 2026 cohort of its Digital & Innovation Fellowship, offering young African technology professionals an opportunity to contribute to digital transformation initiatives across the continent.

The fellowship, now entering its third cohort, is designed to equip emerging innovators and digital experts with hands-on experience while supporting the modernization of African Union institutions and member states. Selected fellows will work closely with policymakers, technical teams, and government institutions to help develop and implement innovative digital solutions.

As Africa continues to accelerate its digital transformation agenda, the program seeks to bridge skills gaps and strengthen the continent's capacity to harness technology for governance, service delivery, and economic development.

According to the African Union, the fellowship aims to create a new generation of leaders capable of driving innovation and digital growth while fostering collaboration between governments, institutions, and the private sector.

"The future of Africa's development is closely tied to digital innovation and technology-driven solutions," an AU representative said. "This fellowship provides young professionals with an opportunity to contribute directly to shaping that future."

Participants will gain practical experience in areas such as digital governance, artificial intelligence, data management, cybersecurity, digital public infrastructure, and emerging technologies. The program also provides mentorship, professional development opportunities, and exposure to continental policy frameworks.

Experts say initiatives such as the AU Digital & Innovation Fellowship are becoming increasingly important as governments across Africa seek to digitize public services and improve efficiency through technology.

"Young Africans possess immense talent and innovative capacity," said digital transformation analyst Sarah Njoroge. "Programs like this allow them to apply their skills to real-world challenges while contributing to Africa's broader development goals."

The fellowship forms part of the African Union's wider efforts to advance digital inclusion, strengthen innovation ecosystems, and promote the implementation of the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa.

With applications now open, the AU is encouraging qualified young professionals from across the continent to apply and become part of a growing network of innovators working to shape Africa's digital future.
