DAR ES SALAAM – In a major push toward sustainable development, UNDP Tanzania, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, the European Union, and the Embassy of Ireland, has officially opened the call for applications for the 3rd Edition of the Energy Efficiency Innovation Challenge.

The initiative arrives at a pivotal moment as Tanzania intensifies its commitment to the National Energy Efficiency Strategy (2024–2034). The challenge aims to identify and accelerate homegrown technical solutions that can lower electricity costs for citizens while reducing the nation's carbon footprint.
Bridging the Gap Between Idea and Impact
While Tanzania’s energy sector continues to expand, experts argue that efficiency is the most cost-effective way to meet rising demand. This year’s challenge seeks to bridge the gap between brilliant local concepts and market-ready products.
The organizers are specifically hunting for breakthroughs in three high-impact categories:
- Smart Consumer Solutions: Technologies that reduce the energy drain of household and commercial appliances.
- Green Building & Infrastructure: Innovations in materials and designs that naturally regulate temperature and light.
- Data-Driven Awareness: Digital tools and monitoring devices that empower Tanzanians to track and manage their electricity consumption in real-time.
What’s at Stake for Innovators?
This is more than a trophy hunt. Selected winners will enter a rigorous ecosystem designed to scale their businesses. Past editions have seen innovators receive up to TZS 25 million in seed funding, alongside specialized technical mentorship to refine their prototypes for the mass market.
"We aren't just looking for ideas; we are looking for the future leaders of Tanzania's green economy," a spokesperson noted during the launch.
Inclusivity at the Core
A key pillar of this year’s challenge is inclusivity. UNDP Tanzania has issued a strong call for youth and women-led startups to participate, ensuring that the transition to a sustainable energy future is equitable and representative of all Tanzanians.
