DAR ES SALAAM — NMB Bank has unveiled its upgraded NMB Mkononi Super App, marking a significant step in the bank’s digital transformation strategy and reinforcing its commitment to expanding financial inclusion across Tanzania. The newly enhanced platform brings together a wide range of financial services into a single digital ecosystem, enabling customers to access banking solutions conveniently through their smartphones.

The launch comes at a time when digital financial services are becoming increasingly important in Tanzania, driven by rising smartphone adoption, improved internet connectivity, and growing demand for convenient banking solutions. Through the Super App, NMB seeks to position itself at the forefront of the country’s rapidly evolving digital banking landscape.

Speaking during the launch event in Dar es Salaam, NMB Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ruth Zaipuna emphasized the bank’s vision of making financial services more accessible and user-friendly.

“We asked ourselves one important question: if your life is in your hands, why shouldn’t your bank be in your hands too?” she said.

According to the bank, the upgraded platform integrates payments, savings, loans, investments, insurance services, and merchant solutions into a single application. Customers can send and receive money, pay utility bills, access credit facilities, purchase insurance products, join savings groups, and make investments without visiting a physical branch.

Unlike traditional mobile banking applications that primarily focus on transactions, the NMB Mkononi Super App has been designed as a broader financial ecosystem that supports different segments of society, including students, entrepreneurs, farmers, salaried workers, traders, and investors.

Zaipuna noted that the platform is intended to go beyond banking and create opportunities for economic empowerment.

“NMB Mkononi is not just a banking app. It is a platform for opportunity and empowerment,” she said.

The bank believes that the platform will contribute significantly to Tanzania’s digital economy by reducing barriers to financial services and increasing participation in the formal financial system. Through digital channels, individuals and businesses can manage their finances more efficiently while saving time and reducing transaction costs.

Financial inclusion remains one of NMB’s key strategic priorities. Over the past several years, the bank has invested heavily in digital technologies aimed at reaching underserved and previously unbanked populations across the country.

Industry experts note that digital banking solutions have become essential tools for extending financial services to rural communities where access to traditional banking infrastructure may be limited. By leveraging mobile technology, banks can offer services to customers regardless of their geographic location.

NMB has already demonstrated success in this area through its various digital initiatives, including digital account opening, mobile banking services, and instant lending products. The new Super App builds upon these achievements by offering an even wider range of services through a single platform.

The launch also reflects NMB’s continued investment in technological innovation. The bank revealed that it has invested more than Sh232 billion in technology, digital systems, and service innovation over the last five years. Future investments are expected to focus on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced digital infrastructure.

The upgraded app includes instant digital lending services, allowing eligible customers to access unsecured loans quickly without paperwork or branch visits. Individual customers can obtain loans of up to Sh2 million, while small businesses can access financing of up to Sh5 million, helping to support entrepreneurship and business growth.

In addition, the platform offers enhanced convenience by enabling users to manage multiple financial activities from a single interface. This approach aligns with global trends where financial institutions are increasingly developing “super apps” that combine numerous services into one digital experience.

Beyond financial services, NMB is encouraging innovation among young Tanzanians. During the launch, Zaipuna highlighted the bank’s willingness to collaborate with technology developers and entrepreneurs whose solutions can create value for customers.

“Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you; go after them,” she urged young people.

She further explained that innovative digital products developed by local entrepreneurs could potentially be integrated into the bank’s ecosystem, creating new opportunities for collaboration and growth.

As competition intensifies within Tanzania’s banking and fintech sectors, the launch of the NMB Mkononi Super App signals NMB’s determination to remain a leader in digital banking innovation. By combining convenience, accessibility, and a broad range of services, the platform is expected to strengthen customer engagement while advancing the country’s financial inclusion agenda.

With digital banking continuing to reshape the financial sector, NMB’s latest innovation represents another milestone in Tanzania’s journey toward a more connected, technology-driven economy. For millions of customers, the Super App offers a glimpse into the future of banking one where financial services are available anytime, anywhere, directly from the palm of their hand.
