Namibia is preparing to transition from hydrogen ambition to operational reality. The national rail operator, TransNamib, has officially secured board approval to begin a high-stakes pilot of the continent's first green hydrogen-powered heavy-duty freight locomotive.
This project, developed in partnership with CMB.TECH and Africa Global Logistics, isn't just a science experiment; it’s a stress test for the future of African heavy industry.

The Tech: Repowering the Past
Rather than purchasing expensive new rolling stock, the project utilizes a repowering strategy. An existing diesel locomotive is being fitted with a BeHydro dual-fuel engine (2,250 hp).
Dual-Fuel Versatility: The engine runs on a mix of green hydrogen and diesel. Crucially, if the hydrogen system fails or runs dry, it automatically switches to 100% diesel, ensuring the freight – and the economy – never stops moving.
The Hydrogen Tender: A specialised waggon behind the locomotive carries two 20-foot containers. Together, they hold 720 kg of compressed hydrogen, which can be swapped out in minutes or refilled via mobile units.

The Torture Test Route
The six-month trial will consist of 50 round trips on one of the most geographically challenging tracks in Southern Africa: the Walvis Bay–Windhoek corridor.
| Feature | Details |
| Distance | 414 kilometers |
| Elevation Gain | 6m at the coast to 1,601m in the highlands |
| Load Type | Heavy freight containers |
| Hydrogen Source | Locally produced at Cleanergy Solutions (Walvis Bay) |
This video provides a first-hand look at the official launch of the hydrogen production facility in Walvis Bay that will fuel the new locomotive.
The steep gradients of the Namibian highlands will serve as definitive proof of concept for hydrogen’s traction performance and reliability under continuous load.
Why This is a Global Milestone
Circular Economy: Namibia has a large fleet of idle locomotives. This technology allows the country to "upcycle" its old fleet into a green one for a fraction of the cost of new electric trains.
Energy Sovereignty: The hydrogen is produced off-grid at a solar-powered facility in Walvis Bay. This reduces Namibia's reliance on imported diesel and leverages its world-class solar resources.
African Leadership: While Europe and Asia have piloted passenger hydrogen trains, Namibia is taking on the "hard-to-abate" sector of heavy-duty freight, providing a blueprint for the entire Southern African Development Community (SADC).
"This pilot will allow us to evaluate performance across a range of indicators, including fuel consumption, reliability, and maintenance requirements."
