NAIROBI, Kenya — In a major move to decongest the capital’s gridlocked streets, Kenya and France have officially signed a €83 million (KSh12.5 billion) agreement to transform the Nairobi Commuter Rail (NCR) network.

The deal, formalized during a high-level bilateral meeting, marks a significant leap forward for the city's ageing transit infrastructure. The investment is part of a broader suite of 11 new agreements aimed at deepening the economic and developmental ties between Nairobi and Paris.

Revitalizing the Tracks

The primary focus of the funding is the comprehensive upgrade of Line 5, the vital artery connecting Nairobi Central Station to the populous Embakasi area. However, the benefits are expected to ripple across the entire metropolitan region.

Key project highlights include:

  • Modernizing Line 5: Enhancing track reliability and station facilities between the City Centre and Embakasi.

  • Strategic Links: Significant upgrades to the lines serving Syokimau, Ruiru, and Kikuyu, creating a more seamless "hub-and-spoke" system for suburban commuters.

  • Capacity Building: Improving signaling and infrastructure to allow for more frequent train intervals, directly reducing wait times.

A Shared Vision for Urban Mobility

For thousands of Nairobi residents, the daily commute is often defined by "matatu" traffic and unpredictable travel times. This project aims to shift that narrative by providing a reliable, high-capacity alternative.

"This partnership isn't just about tracks and trains; it's about the hours returned to our citizens and the economic productivity unlocked by a mobile workforce," noted a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport.

The French government’s involvement brings both financial backing and technical expertise in rail management, a sector where France remains a global leader.
